Enexis Group works every day with 4,500 passionate employees to ensure the stability and reliability of its grids and the future of energy.Knowledge, skills and strength are deployed to accelerate the energy transition and enable a sustainable energy supply.Through grid manager Enexis Netbeheer, part of Enexis Group, the transmission of electricity and gas is provided to 3 million households and businesses in the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, North Brabant and Limburg.Enexis Netbeheer takes care of the construction, maintenance, development and management of the electricity and gas network.
New energy landscape
With all the impending, mostly impactful changes in the field of the environment and digitalisation, it is important for Enexis Group to have a pioneering role. Jan Nijhuis, Facility Management contract manager; ‘The Netherlands is going to become more sustainable and that requires changes in the way we deal with our networks. Developments around the Climate Accord have our attention. What forms of energy can we use? Solar farms and wind turbines are going to provide more and more power and electricity consumption is rising, partly due to the arrival of electric cars and electrification of heat demand. How do we handle this smartly and how can we facilitate it properly? This energy transition, combined with developments in data and digitalisation, are top of mind for us. This requires our organisation to prepare for the future by investing in research, innovation and keeping the knowledge level of our employees up to scratch.’
A close collaboration between control organisation Enexis Group and partner Nsecure
Partly because of the complexity and speed of change in the energy landscape, Enexis made the choice in 2012 to organise itself as a directional organisation so that it could focus entirely on its core business. ‘Facility matters such as catering, cleaning, accommodation but also security we have completely outsourced. These are the core activities of specialist parties. So our partners, including Nsecure - Unica Access & Security International's expert centre, know better than anyone else what's going on here and have the right knowledge and expertise to deal with it,’ says Jan Nijhuis.
At Enexis Group, security comes first. The physical safety of employees; being able to do their work safely under safe conditions. As a control organisation, Enexis Group expects its partners to be experts in this. Nijhuis says; ‘We also see a shift in the field of safety. This goes beyond the physical safety of our people both at office locations and when working in the field. Organisational and technical security of our data and systems is also essential to prevent unauthorised access to them.’
Smart systems in one security environment
Meanwhile, Nsecure has been Enexis Group's access and security partner for many years, with the relationship having started when Enexis was still part of Essent. Security components such as access control, camera observation and intrusion come together in the Yardz Security Management System. ‘This means that from one environment we have visibility into all activities taking place at our 39 locations, ranging from our head office to a 200 m2 warehouse, and visibility into our data.’
Increasing security and hospitality
Enexis Group also uses the Observation Room service, linking to the Security Management System and all underlying essential security components.
Jan Nijhuis; ‘Thanks to the services from the Observation Room, we are ensuring that we have a proactive and smarter approach to security and hospitality. From a security perspective because a higher level of security is required at a number of locations. For example, because of systems or materials present. Unfortunately, we have to deal with unauthorised people trying to enter our premises. You want to prevent break-ins and theft and only physical security in the form of cameras and fencing is not enough to deter unauthorised persons. From the Observation Room, proactive action can be taken on reports that are spotted. As a result, the police were recently called in on time and thieves were caught red-handed, preventing copper theft. Also, when FAFS is needed at our sites, it is connected to the Observation Room and the notification is coordinated."
Easy and safe access for visitors
At other locations, it is actually important to implement from a hospitality point of view, given that not all locations have a manned reception. Because intercom calls end up in the Observation Room or are connected to a nearby Enexis Group location, suppliers and visitors can gain remote access.
Organisational, technical and physical security
Nijhuis: ‘The total access and security service as a whole makes a major contribution to ensuring our safety. It is impossible to imagine our overall business processes without it.Certainly when we look at the easy and secure way in which our employees enter the locations and areas that apply to them with their access passes on the basis of an established job profile. But also the data from these security systems ensure, that we always have insight and can act to set things up smarter and more effectively."
